The Farm

Distillery Lane Ciderworks is located on Gapland Road, just south of the historic town of Burkittsville, Maryland.  The farm, known on Frederick County records as "The Encampment", sheltered Union troops just prior to the Battle of Burkittsville and Crampton's Gap.  The farmhouse on the property, dating back to 1840, served as a quartermaster's house after it was taken over by Union soldiers.

The farmhouse, adjacent carriage house, and Civil War era barn foundation are all registered as Maryland Historic properties.  The new cider making facility was designed to keep with the historic appearance of the property and surrounding community.  The area surrounding our farm was once dotted with distilleries.  Up to the days of prohibition (and perhaps during and after), distilleries in this area produced beer and whiskey.  The ruins of one such distillery are visible in the woods near our farm.
The property, which stretches for 95 acres, contains about 10 acres of orchard,  and the rest mostly woods, and pastures.
